Serenity Concert August 21st

Posted by Editor on August 21st, 2010 under Special Events

The performance of the “Serenity” choir from South Wales was greatly enjoyed by the audience of nearly 200 people who came to Radford Road Church to hear this wonderful choir. The performers were vibrant, energetic and had an obvious love of music and of performing. There was a wide range of music from gospel to pop, classical to jazz  and songs from the shows.  Some arrangements had been specially written for the choir by Chris Andrews. Choir members performed solo items and a special duet of “The Flower Duet” from the opera Lakme by Delibes sung by Emma Height and her mother, Margaret, who is the organist at Radford Road Church, was one of the highlights of the evening. It was an outstanding musical evening and the infectious enjoyment of singing was relayed to the audience. Many thanks go to Patrick Steed, the Musical Director, Emma Height the Co-Director, Chris Andrews, the accompanist, Margaret, George and Stephen Height for arranging the evening so competently and to the whole choir for a magnificent evening.

A grand total of £1040 was raised for the Church Organ Fund. Thank you to all who helped to make the evening such a resounding success. We do hope that the choir will make a return visit.

Afternoon Soiree August 14th 2010

An Afternoon Soiree was greatly enjoyed by all who attended. Ladies were asked to wear their smartest clothes. Lovely outfits were paraded and matching wide brimmed hats or fancy fascinators completed the outfits. It could have been Ladies’ Day at Ascot!

Margaret Height  arranged a splendid programme of music and readings. Between each item canapees and drinks were served whilst the audience promenaded and took part in lively conversation with each other.

The event was to raise money so that the Bible Society could buy Proclaimers – solar panelled audio Bibles which enable the poorest people in the world, who are unable to read or write, to hear the Word of God. These oral communities ‘read with their ears’ – telling stories and sharing information by word of mouth.

The Soiree raised over  £250.00 which will enable Radford Road Church to complete its 12 months of money raising for this year’s Mission project, “Faith comes by Hearing”. A cheque for £1000 was presented by the church to Mr Eric Munder, a representative from the Bible Society, for the purchase of Proclaimers for people in Tanzania.

Everyone enjoying their strawberries and cream whilst John Garrett played on his keyboard.

As it was the Women’s Final Day at Wimbledon today a Strawberry Tea was held at the Church.

A good crowd of people forsook their television screens (it was a foregone conclusion anyway and Serena did win easily!) and enjoyed a very happy afternoon eating home-made scones and fresh strawberries with lashings of cream.  John Garrett, a blind keyboard player, entertained everyone with delightful music. There was a Browsing stall, a Cake stall and a Raffle and the proceeds from the afternoon, totalling £220.20,  are for the upkeep of the  church.

Edith Chambers 100 years young

Cutting the cake

Everyone at Radford Road Church was delighted to join in the celebrations  of Edith’s 100th birthday. Relatives travelled from Scotland, Germany and Northern Ireland to join with Edith’s many friends for this very special occasion. A concert was given by the Lillington Ladies’ Choir under the direction of Mrs  Margaret Height. Medleys of well-known songs were performed and the guests joined in several of the choruses. Some choir members recited amusing poems relevant to the occasion.

The church is very grateful for the generous gift of a large screen television set donated by Edith and the family to mark this special occasion.

May 15th 2010

It’s the passion and dedication of hundreds of thousands of people throughout the UK who give, act and pray every year that makes Christian Aid Week such an extraordinary stand against world poverty.

During Christian Aid Week this year a band of collectors from Radford Road Church has been knocking on doors in the Old Milverton Road area, Sydenham estate and part of Lillington collecting the red envelopes containing people’s donations.

The week culminated in the Mayor’s Challenge Walk around Victoria Park and the Pump Room Gardens. It was a beautiful day and the gallant band of walkers completed several laps of the figure of eight circuit accompanied by the Mayor, his consort and the Town Clerk

Teddies and Jumpers Galore

April 24th 2010

Since February, the Wednesday Lunch Club ladies and their friends have knitted 38 teddies, 29 jumpers, 71 blanket squares, 2 blankets and have supplied 8 empty margarine tubs for the storage of screws and nails in the woodwork workshops, to be sent by the Tools with a Mission charity (TWAM) to needy people world wide.

In many countries of the world people have few skills, little education and no means of earning a living. A switch from aid dependency to self sufficiency is impossible without help. The Tools with a Mission Project enables people to earn a living and to support themselves.

The project has also supported the work of orphanages in Zambia and Uganda by providing books and computers for the schools and tools for the skills and trade centre. The teddies and blankets will go to some of the children in these orphanages.

Iain Rennie and Mark and Alex each received a Study Bible and a membership ticket and the Elders welcomed them with the right hand of fellowship.
